Testing emails correctly: How to check your design and placeholders

Before sending out your campaign, doing a test run is essential. In JUNE, you have several ways to check your emails – depending on whether you just want a quick look at the layout or need to verify that all dynamic placeholders are populated correctly.

1. The full campaign test (Recommended for the final check)

Where? In the Campaign Planner

If you want to ensure that all dynamic placeholders, personalizations, and conditions are displayed exactly as they will be in the actual sendout, this is the right approach.

Here is how it works:

  1. Open your campaign (Status: Draft) and switch to the Send tab.

  2. Click on Send Test.

  3. Select one or more datasets you want to use to test the placeholders.

  4. Your user email (the one you use to log into your JUNE account) is automatically set as the recipient for this test email. You can add more recipient addresses or replace the pre-filled one.

  5. Click on Send to confirm.

Note:
If you select multiple datasets, you will receive one test email per dataset.

2. The placeholder browser preview

Where? Directly in the Editor (Automation)

Want to quickly check how your placeholders look with real data while building your email, without actually sending one? Use the preview feature.

Here is how it works:

  1. In the Editor, go to Automation.

  2. Click on Select Data and choose the desired dataset.

  3. Click on Test Placeholder.

  4. Your draft will now open in a new browser tab. All placeholders are populated with the real data from your selected dataset.

3. The quick design test

Where? Directly in the Editor (Top Menu)

This test is perfect for checking the basic layout (e.g., spacing, images, colors) across different devices or email clients (like Outlook or Apple Mail).

Here is how it works:

  1. In the Top Menu, click on Actions > Test > Send Test.

  2. Enter the email address(es) of the test recipients.

Note: This is a basic layout test. Dynamic placeholders and personalizations will not be populated or displayed here.
