Use Parameters / Placeholders In Emails

Use dynamic data like first names in your emails. Dynamic placeholders / personalized emails / variables / parameters

Written by Anni Wild

To help you connect with your customers on a more personal level, JUNE lets you populate your emails with dynamic placeholders that are tailored specifically to each individual customer.

Why should you use dynamic data? Dynamic data makes your emails more personal and relevant. Instead of sending the same standard message to every contact, these placeholders automatically populate with your recipients’ individual information when the email is sent. This significantly increases customer engagement and click-through rates.

Examples of what data can be used for dynamic placeholders to send out personalized emails:

  • Personal informationen

    • Name, Email address, phone number, location, position

  • Company information

    • Company name, industry, number of employees, turnover

  • Social Media information

    • Name, follower count, URL

  • Behavior/Activity

    • Source, entry page, conversion event, conversion date, email opened, date, last purchase, contact person.

  • Branch-related information

    • Clothing size, number of children, favorite items

Requirements to be able to use dynamic placeholders:

The email must be linked to a campaign or an action to get information about the existing placeholders of the linked list.

Using A Placeholder

As soon as an email is linked to a list, whether via a campaign or via actions, a new icon appears in the right sidebar of the editor, which takes you to a list of all existing parameters.

The listed fields can be dragged and dropped into your email - either in the body text or in the settings, e.g. the link or text of a button.

Example: Setting a Salutation Placeholder

To use a personalized salutation in an email, you can use the generated placeholder Salutation.

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Open the JUNE Email Editor and create a new email or edit an existing one

  2. Link the email to a campaign or an action to access placeholders

  3. Open the Automation section in the right sidebar and look for the Salutation placeholder

  4. Drag and drop the placeholder into the text field where the salutation should appear

  5. To change the salutation (default: "Hello Firstname Lastname,"), click on the placeholder in the Rich Text Editor, then click on JUNE Code

  6. Here, you can modify "Hello" to your preferred salutation

  7. Save your changes and test the email with a preview or a test send

    1. To do this, open Automation in the right sidebar and click Select Data at the bottom

    2. First, choose a complete dataset and then an incomplete one to see how different users will receive the email

    3. After selecting a dataset, click Test Placeholder at the bottom. A separate window will open, showing the final email.

💡 If a dataset does not contain a first and last name, the email will only display "Hello"
